Legal Services

Understanding and accessing legal services is essential for immigrants and migrants needing assistance with immigration status, labor rights, and family law. Navigating the legal system can be overwhelming due to language barriers, financial constraints, and fear of discrimination or deportation. The resources in this guide connect individuals with affordable or pro-bono legal support, helping them to understand their rights, receive representation, and make informed decisions. Access to legal services empowers immigrant communities to protect their rights and build a secure future.

Types of Immigration Legal Assistance

  • Accredited Representatives: These are trained professionals who have received special accreditation from the U.S. Department of Justice to provide immigration assistance. They are authorized to work exclusively for non-profits certified by the Department of Justice. You can often find them at community centers or local events, offering accessible and reliable support.

  • “Pro Bono” Immigration Lawyers: These are licensed attorneys who offer their immigration services free of charge to individuals in need. They are required to have graduated from law school and be certified by their State Bar Association. Pro bono attorneys are often affiliated with organizations like the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, where they provide critical legal support to underserved communities.

  • Low-Cost Immigration Lawyers: Often referred to as "low bono" services, these lawyers or agencies provide affordable legal assistance, typically requiring proof of income and prioritizing individuals with limited financial means. Organizations like Catholic Charities of Cleveland are well-known for offering reliable, low-cost immigration legal services to those in need.

  • Private Immigration Lawyers: These attorneys charge fees for their services, which can vary significantly depending on the complexity of the case. While many private immigration lawyers provide excellent and professional support, some may take advantage of clients by offering low-quality services at high costs. Private attorneys are licensed professionals who have completed law school, earned a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, and passed the bar exam in their respective states. To ensure you receive quality representation, it’s recommended to find a private attorney through trusted referrals or established networks.

  • Notarios: Many immigrants fall victim to scams involving "notarios." These individuals falsely claim they can help families gain legal status. The term “notario” is often misunderstood by immigrant families, as it carries a different meaning in other countries, where notarios are typically licensed legal professionals. In the United States, however, notarios are not required to have legal training and lack the authority to provide legal advice or services. It’s important to seek help only from qualified immigration attorneys or accredited representatives.
